Things to do in Orlando: theme parks, springs and day trips
How to plan Disney, Universal and SeaWorld, plus the best of Orlando beyond the parks: Winter Park, springs, beaches and Kennedy Space Center.

Quick answer
- Give each theme park its own day: Walt Disney World has four parks, Universal Orlando three including Epic Universe, plus SeaWorld.
- Beyond the parks, the best things to do in Orlando are Winter Park, Lake Eola, swimming at Wekiwa Springs and a day at Kennedy Space Center.
- November to April is the most comfortable time to visit; summer is hot and humid with daily storms, and hurricane season runs June to November.
| Ideal trip | 7 nights for a few parks; 10–14 for more |
|---|---|
| Best months | November–April |
| Kennedy Space Center | About 60–90 minutes' drive |
| Nearest beach | Cocoa Beach, about 60–90 minutes |
| Springs parks | Day-use reservation required |
How should you plan Disney, Universal and SeaWorld?
Walt Disney World has four theme parks: Magic Kingdom for classic rides and characters, EPCOT for World Showcase and food, Hollywood Studios for Star Wars and movie attractions, and Animal Kingdom for wildlife and Pandora. Allow a full day for each park you choose rather than buying days just to see them all.
Universal Orlando's parks are Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure and Epic Universe, which has Super Nintendo World, the Ministry of Magic and the Isle of Berk. Give Epic Universe its own day. The Hogwarts Express links the two original parks only and needs a park-to-park ticket.
SeaWorld suits coaster fans, and its Sesame Street Land is aimed at younger children. Check ride height limits before buying tickets, and compare paid queue options such as Disney's Lightning Lane and Universal Express, which have different rules. Schedule a pool day after every two big park days.
What can you do in Orlando beyond the theme parks?
Winter Park, about 30–45 minutes from International Drive, is perfect for a slower day: walk Park Avenue, see the Tiffany collection at the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art and take the scenic boat tour through its lakes and canals.
Downtown, walk around Lake Eola, then eat in Thornton Park or the Mills 50 district, known for Vietnamese food and murals. On a rainy afternoon, the Orlando Science Center is a good choice for children; on cooler mornings, try Harry P. Leu Gardens.
Which day trips from Orlando are worth the drive?
Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, about 60–90 minutes away, needs a full day for Space Shuttle Atlantis, the rocket garden and the bus tour. A rocket launch is a bonus, as schedules often change.
For the Atlantic, Cocoa Beach is the easiest beach day, and New Smyrna Beach adds a pleasant small town. Clearwater Beach on the Gulf has famous sunsets but is two to three hours away, so it works better as an overnight trip.
Wekiwa Springs, about 40–60 minutes away, has spring swimming and trails, and Blue Spring, about an hour away, is the place to see manatees in winter, when its swimming area closes to protect them. Both state parks require a day-use reservation booked online.
When is the best time to visit Orlando?
November to April is the best time for sightseeing. January and February are coolest, so pack a jacket for evenings. March and April are busy with US spring breaks and Easter.
June to August is hot and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms and school-holiday crowds; plan outdoor time for the morning. Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to November, so choose flexible bookings and travel insurance for those months.
Where should you stay in Orlando?
- Disney resort hotels: best if Disney is the focus and you want included transport to the parks.
- Universal hotels: best for a Universal-heavy trip; check each hotel's transport and perks, as Epic Universe is on a separate site.
- International Drive: a good middle ground for mixed itineraries, with many restaurants.
- Kissimmee vacation homes: space and kitchens for large families, but you'll need a car.
- Winter Park or downtown: for couples who want restaurants and walkable neighborhoods.
Frequently asked questions
Can you enjoy Orlando without the theme parks?
Yes. Combine Winter Park, Lake Eola, museums and gardens with a springs visit, and add Kennedy Space Center or a beach day.
How many days do you need in Orlando?
Seven nights covers a few parks and some sightseeing. Allow 10–14 nights for several Disney and Universal days with rest days in between.
Do you need a car in Orlando?
A car is very useful for springs, beaches and neighborhoods. A park-focused trip can work with resort transport and rideshares.
