Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

Quick answer

  • The best things to do in Punta Cana are a boat trip to Saona Island, snorkelling at Catalina Island, swimming at Hoyo Azul and exploring beaches beyond the resorts, such as Macao and Juanillo.
  • Choose Saona for beaches and the shallow natural pool, or Catalina for snorkelling and diving; both are full-day trips from most resorts.
  • Humpback whales gather in Samaná Bay from about mid-January to late March, but it's a long day from Punta Cana, at around four hours each way by road.

Which Punta Cana excursions are best for couples and families?

  • Couples: Saona Island, Catalina snorkelling or whale watching in Samaná.
  • Families: a calm-water Saona catamaran, Hoyo Azul and beach time.
  • Adventure: Macao Beach buggy rides, ziplining and Los Haitises by boat.
  • History: Santo Domingo's Colonial Zone.
  • Resort location matters: Bávaro, Cap Cana and Uvero Alto have very different transfer times, so ask for the door-to-door duration.

Saona Island or Catalina Island?

Saona is the classic Punta Cana excursion. Tours drive to Bayahibe, then continue by speedboat or catamaran, usually with a stop at a shallow natural pool offshore before lunch and beach time on the island. Ask how long you'll actually spend on Saona and whether the natural pool is included.

Catalina Island, off La Romana, is the better choice if snorkelling or diving is your priority. Road transfers take one to two hours. In short: Saona for beaches and boat time, Catalina for what's underwater. Book either ahead for Christmas, New Year and February.

Hoyo Azul, Macao and beaches beyond the resort

Hoyo Azul is a striking blue cenote below limestone cliffs, inside Scape Park at Cap Cana, and is reached by a short forest trail with steps. It's quick from Cap Cana resorts but further from Bávaro and Uvero Alto.

Macao Beach, north of Bávaro, is one of the island's finest public beaches, popular with surfers and on buggy tours, which are dusty, bumpy and best for older children. Its surf can be strong. For calmer water, try Playa Juanillo at Cap Cana.

Is Samaná whale watching worth it from Punta Cana?

Every winter, thousands of humpback whales come to Samaná Bay to mate and give birth. The official season runs from about mid-January to late March, and February is the peak. Sightings are never guaranteed, and responsible operators follow approach-distance rules.

The trip is long: around four hours each way by road, plus the boat trip. Many day tours combine it with Cayo Levantado island. If whales are a priority, consider a night in Samaná instead.

Santo Domingo and Los Haitises

Santo Domingo's UNESCO-listed Colonial Zone was the first European city in the Americas, with the Catedral Primada, Parque Colón and the Alcázar de Colón. Allow about 2.5–3 hours each way by road.

Los Haitises National Park, on Samaná Bay, has mangrove channels, limestone islets, birdlife and caves with Taíno rock art, explored by boat. It's also a long transfer, so choose one or the other: history in Santo Domingo, or nature in Los Haitises.

How do you choose a safe Punta Cana tour?

  • Book with established operators that can show their tourism licence; avoid unofficial sellers on the beach.
  • Get the full itinerary in writing: pickup point, transfer time, activities, lunch and return time.
  • For boats, check life jackets in children's sizes, shade and the weather policy; for buggies, helmets and driver age rules.
  • Avoid long excursions the day before your flight home, and check your travel insurance covers boat trips and activities.
  • Check your government's travel advice before you go.
