Summer (December to February)
Long days and warm weather make summer ideal for the Bay of Islands, Coromandel beaches, Abel Tasman's coastal track and the Great Walks, which need booking well ahead. It is also peak season, with school holidays on both sides of the Tasman, so book cars, campervans and accommodation early.
Autumn (March to May)
Autumn is often the best time for a road trip: the weather is more stable, crowds thin after Easter, and the poplars and vineyards of Central Otago and Arrowtown turn gold, usually from mid-April.
Winter (June to August)
The South Island's ski fields, including Coronet Peak, The Remarkables and Cardrona near Queenstown, Treble Cone near Wanaka and Mount Hutt near Christchurch, usually open from late June. Queenstown has direct flights from Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, making a ski week easy.
Winter is also good for the North Island's geothermal parks and hot pools around Rotorua, and for whale watching at Kaikōura.
Spring (September to November)
Spring brings lambs, blossom and full waterfalls as snow melts. The weather is changeable, but prices are lower and the roads are quiet.
Fiordland and Milford Sound in any season
Milford Sound is one of the wettest places in New Zealand, and that is part of the magic: after rain, hundreds of temporary waterfalls pour down the cliffs. The drive from Te Anau takes about two hours each way and can close because of snow or avalanche risk in winter, so check the road status before you set off.
- Australian citizens don't need a visa to visit New Zealand.
- New Zealand drives on the left, like Australia, but roads are often narrow and winding; allow more time than the map suggests.
