Summer (June to August)
Summer is when Switzerland feels made for families escaping Gulf heat: lake cruises in Lucerne, mountain trains above Interlaken and long, light evenings. It is also the busiest and most expensive season, so book hotels and the best rooms with views months ahead.
- Interlaken: the base for Jungfraujoch, Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen.
- Lucerne: lake, old town and easy day trips to Mount Pilatus and Titlis.
- Zermatt: car-free village with views of the Matterhorn.
Shoulder months (May and September)
Late May and September bring smaller crowds and lower hotel prices. Some high mountain lifts close for maintenance in spring and late autumn, so check opening dates for the ones you want.
Winter (December to March)
Winter is ski season in resorts such as Zermatt, St. Moritz and Grindelwald, and Christmas markets fill the cities in December. Valleys can be grey and cold, so plan around the mountains.
Getting around
Swiss trains are punctual and scenic. The Swiss Travel Pass covers most trains, buses and boats and gives discounts on many mountain railways; compare it with single tickets for your exact route.
Before you book
Switzerland is in the Schengen area. Check whether your passport needs a Schengen visa and, if it does, apply early: summer appointment slots fill up fast.
