Spring (March to May)

Cherry blossom usually reaches Tokyo and Kyoto in late March or early April and moves north over the following weeks, reaching Hokkaido around early May. Exact dates change every year, so follow the official forecasts.

Hotels in Kyoto fill up months ahead for blossom season. Golden Week at the start of May is the busiest travel week of the year.

Summer (June to August)

June brings the rainy season to most of Japan, though not to Hokkaido. July and August are hot and humid, but it is festival season, with fireworks and summer matsuri across the country.

Autumn (September to November)

September can still bring typhoons. From October the weather turns mild and clear, and autumn colours reach Kyoto and Tokyo from mid-November to early December.

Winter (December to February)

Tokyo has cold, bright, often cloudless days and fewer visitors. Hokkaido, including Niseko, is one of the world's best places for powder snow. Note that many businesses close for a few days around New Year.
