In view of the coronavirus pandemic, Canada and USA have decided, ‘ by mutual consent, ‘ to suspend any movement between the two beyond ‘ critical traffic ‘ and ‘ trade, ‘ as first announced on Twitter by President Donald Trump and verified in a briefing on Wednesday by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
During a press conference with Trudeau earlier this week, Canada declared it would close its borders to all non-citizens and residents except American citizens.
During the briefing on Wednesday the Canadian Prime Minister said that the concept of non-essential travel as prohibited in this case applies specifically to “tourism and cross-border shopping.” The new temporary suspension does not cover immediate critical business travel, commerce, and other commercial transportation.
Trudeau said Canada is “working with the U.S. to ensure that these measures come into force as quickly as possible,” while refusing to set a precise starting date or period for them to take effect.
During a White House press briefing, U.S. Vice President Mike Pence said that the travel ban on the American side of the border will be enforced by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
