Amtrak Incorporating Technology for Safety of Passengers

Travel by trains in US

For the safety and well being of the customers, Amtrak is implementing new personal safety measures to keep the passengers safe while traveling in this time of the pandemic.

“As we continue to prioritize health and safety in traveling, it’s important we provide our customers with new, innovative measures that promote physical distancing and contactless travel,” said Amtrak President and CEO, Bill Flynn.

However, Amtrak is introducing new technology for its customers. Now with the Amtrak app customers can purchase tickets, access up-to-date gate and boarding information, and present e-tickets using their own mobile phones.

Moreover, the app provides real-time boarding information when customers enable push notifications through the Amtrak mobile app. So that they can wait comfortably at a distance until their train is ready.

“We encourage all customers to download the app to receive our new app updates, which will prevent crowding inside the station waiting for the boarding information to post; and provide an extra level of confidence to make travel safe and secure, in addition to the many safety measures onboard our trains and at our stations,” added Flynn.

Most of the changes are at New York’s Penn Station (NYP) and also at other stations across the U.S.

Amtrak is implementing the following modifications:

Amtrak has placed protective plastic barriers at its customer counters at Amtrak’s busiest stations and where ever needed.

Cleaning Protocols

There is intensive and frequent cleaning throughout the station with an extra concentration on high-touch surfaces such as door handles, countertops, seating areas, and Quik-Trak kiosks. EPA registered disinfectants are used to disinfect the surfaces.

NYP station is closed every night between the hours of 12:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. to allow for complete disinfection.

Moreover, Amtrak provides hand sanitizer products for the use of its customers in all Amtrak areas of the station.

Social Distancing

In high-traffic areas at Amtrak’s busiest stations, signs are installed to indicate safe distances in high-traffic areas.

Face Masks

Amtrak has made it mandatory for all employees and customers to wear facemasks while inside stations and onboard trains.

Arrival Time

Amtrak is advising its customers to arrive 30 minutes prior to their departure. However, if they will need ticketing or baggage assistance they must come 60 minutes prior to departure.

Boarding Policy

The Priority Boarding feature has been discontinued, ensuring that all passengers can board when they are ready and have the space to remain socially distanced throughout the boarding and seating process.

Limiting Capacity

It is offering limited new capacity restrictions at ClubAcela to protect customers and prevent overcrowding.

Increased staff

Amtrak has increased its staff at NYP. One staff member will be upstairs and another downstairs on the platform. To guide the passengers and minimize customers from wandering around in search of the right train.
